Erectile Dysfunction can be caused by many medical conditions and medications; if you’re experiencing this issue, consult with your doctor as soon as possible.
Some foods and supplements can naturally help boost sexual performance, including oysters, chocolate and watermelons. Natural supplements may help improve blood flow and libido; however, getting a prescription from a certified physician is the only sure way to ensure safety and effectiveness.
1. Strengthens the Penis
Since 2010, Western societies have seen a shift towards greater recognition of sexual problems among men, and greater attention from medical and pharmaceutical disciplines regarding physical treatments for those difficulties. A surge in development of sexuopharmaceuticals such as Viagra has become one of the most recognized and commercially successful.
Most sexuopharmaceuticals developed to treat ED are oral medications that work by relaxing muscles in the penis and allowing blood to more freely pass through them. Unfortunately, this approach may alter sexual relationships in unwanted ways and increase dependency (see Mamo and Fishman 2001 for further reference).
Viagra helps restore their erections for many men; in addition, however, additional benefits enhance their bedroom experiences – including physical well-being and greater sexual satisfaction – as well as an enhanced ability to engage in orgasmic sex.
While some of these changes may be beneficial to some couples, it’s essential to carefully consider how they could impact on each individual relationship. According to several female participants in this research study, their male partners’ use of Viagra led them to focus less on non-coital activities and foreplay.
This can be partially driven by an urge for more satisfying sexual experiences, reinforced by pharmaceutical advertising that emphasizes these effects. But there are other contributing factors as well; medical conditions like Parkinson’s and Peyronie’s (a build-up of scar tissue in the penis) as well as medications such as antidepressants can aggravate this condition and contribute to its symptoms.
2. Strengthens the Erectile Function
Viagra’s recent launch as an oral spray and mint strip mint strip has made waves on UK television. Where previously pharmaceutical promotions for sexual pills were mostly limited to inbox spam folders, healthcare giant Pfizer has taken things one step further with an entertaining, entertaining commercial showing a man dancing after their love life is restored thanks to Viagra.
The commercial features a dance-off between male and female partners who mimick the iconic’sex on demand’ scene from Pretty Woman by taking Viagra to achieve their goal of having an erection while dancing together, illustrating how pharmaceutical industry normatization of its use among men has altered relationships and highlighted the damage done to marriages as a result of increased use.
Many women in our study reported unwelcome changes to their sexual relationship after their partner began taking Viagra, such as increased pressure to engage in penile-vaginal sex (particularly for their partner); support their partner’s enthusiasm for revitalized sexual life by engaging in sexual relations themselves and encourage him or her to use Viagra too; or encourage the other to try it themselves.
Advertisements depicting Viagra as offering effortless success can set high expectations that may be difficult to fulfill. Furthermore, this can add stress into a relationship; our research revealed how this was particularly a factor among women living in traditional marriages where coital sex was seen as part of their “wifely duties,” or those in physically and emotionally abusive relationships.
3. Enhances Sexual Desire
Viagra’s influence has profoundly transformed how men view sexual desire and sexuality within relationships, from how they talk about sex to prioritizing non-coital activities and finding joy in penile stimulation. Pfizer recently unveiled an advertising campaign featuring a man dancing after receiving Viagra Connect treatment as proof.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that while the effects of Viagra are felt predominantly by men taking it, its implications extend far beyond men alone. Some participants found that one partner taking Viagra caused significant changes in the mode and intensity of sexual relations for both of them – specifically an increase in penetrative sexual acts – which some found problematic as it made it more difficult for equal and balanced sexual intimacy as well as providing increased sexual intensity associated with Viagra use. This presented challenges for certain women as it prevented an equal approach to sexual intimacy which was both challenging when taking part in sexual relations due to this effect on one partner taking both partners taking part.
Viagra’s widespread appeal has raised awareness of erectile dysfunction (ED). Many doctors are now more comfortable addressing sexual health concerns among their patients after being trained in PDE5 inhibitor use and becoming familiar with treating this condition. Viagra use has helped normalise conversations about sexuality within relationships and reduce stigma and embarrassment when discussing it with medical professionals, making it more acceptable for men of all ages to discuss their sex life openly with healthcare providers. One primary motivation for men taking up Viagra was alleviating feelings of shame associated with medical conditions that may be difficult or uncomfortable to discuss.
4. Enhances Sexual Performance
Viagra not only possesses physical advantages, but it is also imbued with coded meaning within couples’ sexual relationships. Not only can the medication alter a man’s erection but it may have more far reaching psychosocial implications (Cohen et al. 2001: 442) as well as potential unsettling side-effects for some women concerning their partner’s use of this substance.
Medical researchers who have conducted studies on Viagra tend to focus on its effects on men; few of their studies address sexual consequences of taking it for partners of women in New Zealand. This project attempted to address this gap by conducting interviews with couples impacted by this drug in New Zealand.
Participants were recruited from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and sexual orientations, and ranged in age from 30 to 68 years. Interviews took place either in their homes or at university by members of the research team and typically lasted up to two hours and were semi-structured in nature.
Women discussed some additional benefits of Viagra usage such as sexual enhancement, increased desire and sensual pleasure; however, men also highlighted potential negative outcomes arising from their partners taking it.
One female participant noted that advertisements for Viagra often depict effortless success as easily obtainable, setting high expectations that could turn out to be stressful if not met. She further commented on its focus on men’s sexual desires and pleasures rather than women’s needs, an example of male privilege; additionally she mentioned her 59-year-old partner’s use of it as sexual abuse.
5. Improves Sexual Health
Studies of Viagra and sildenafil (the active ingredient), have primarily focused on its efficacy in treating erectile dysfunction (ED). ED can be caused by medications for high blood pressure or diabetes as well as medical conditions like Parkinson’s disease or Peyronie’s disease; or due to mental health issues like depression and stress.
Men who suffer from ED can take medication to restore an erection that allows sexual intimacy. This improvement in sexual functioning may lead to greater levels of satisfaction, confidence and self-esteem; additionally it may increase feelings of intimacy within couples which increases relationship happiness and satisfaction.
Women may use Viagra when their partners suffer from ED; however, a study on women’s experiences with Viagra indicates it could potentially have harmful side-effects in certain couples.
Women noted that their male partners’ use of Viagra diminished time spent engaging in nonsexual activities like eating and drinking. One long-term partner who did not take Viagra expressed her disappointment that her husband was using an aid meant for his benefit against his will, taking up precious hours from both him and herself.
Viagra’s widespread promotion may help create positive attitudes about sexuality in later age; however, its promotion could create the expectation that healthy and normal aging necessitates sustained penile-vaginal sex activity as part of healthy and normal aging – leading to men recycling their “older” bodies to conform with this normative model of sexuality.
