Metabolic Ecosystem
At any moment in time, trillions of chemical reactions take place inside our bodies – these form the backbone of metabolism – a series of connections, enzymes and processes which keep us alive and healthy. While many are familiar with “metabolism” due to health and fitness clickbait headlines (“5 easy ways to boost your metabolism” or “the 6 sneakiest habits to burn fat”), metabolic processes actually play a much more subtle role: driving our entire system to perform at its optimum.
Metabolism is at the core of life, from basic bacterial nutrient utilization to human energy production and consumption systems. Its significance varies greatly with environmental conditions as well as individual reactions to resources or predators; as such it’s crucial that one takes into account how metabolic rates change over time and across ecological contexts.
Our research explores how metabolic rate patterns reveal fundamental trade-offs and adaptive specialization in ecosystems, which has direct bearing on ecosystem respiration rates. To this end, our multi-scale approach explores how energy flows are predicted by metabolic rates which integrate information about environmental, trophic and life history characteristics of organisms.
Iron is an essential nutrient for humans and other organisms alike, playing an essential role in both global carbon cycling as well as ocean biogeochemistry and climate, both today and over geologic time scales. Isotopic analyses of seawater have become a useful way of diagnosing sources and tracking iron fluxes into the ocean.
Non-heme iron in the diet is absorbed from the intestinal lumen into enterocytes via ferric reductases such as duodenal cytochrome b reductase (Dcytb) or divalent metal transporters such as DMT1 and DMT2, or ferroportin-1 (FPN1) translocation across the basolateral membrane, or stored as ferritin.
Disorders of iron metabolism, specifically low body iron levels and anemia, are prevalent pathologies affecting over two billion people globally. Iron deficiency anemia is the most widespread form of anemia; its most prevalent manifestation being iron deficiency anemia which may be due to numerous causes including diet restrictions, malabsorption issues or genetic mutations causing abnormalities within either transferrin receptor 1 gene or hemochromatosis genes.
Mindful Movement
Mindful movement or “movement meditation,” involves the combination of mindfulness with physical activity to strengthen the mind-body connection. While most mindful movement research focuses on slower-paced and intentional movements like yoga or walking meditation, its principles can also be applied to more vigorous exercises like weightlifting and HIIT routines. When practicing a movement with mindful awareness in mind, try paying close attention to how it feels on your body: easy or hard, difficult or neutral – taking note of how easy or hard, difficult or neutral this may feel for best appreciation of workout enjoyment!
As an example, when performing a dumbbell squat, pay attention to how your legs and hips engage with the ground, your breathing, the stretch in your quads and how pressure on heels and toes feels as you begin your movement. Focusing your attention will allow for easier and more mindful movement as well as potentially increase power output.
Mindful movement can also help strengthen concentration during times of stress or when needing to focus on something important. According to one recent study, participants of an 8 week mindfulness program improved their attentional capabilities even when engaged in cognitively demanding tasks (Clark et al. 2020).
Mindful movement can also help keep us aware of life’s amazing experiences, which has been shown to promote well-being according to a 2019 Frontiers in Psychology study.
Mindful movement can be an excellent way for those who want to explore mindfulness but find sitting still and meditating unappealing. You don’t require special equipment – just leave your headphones at home so you can fully focus on the sensations of movement and pay attention to how your body responds. Doing this can help bring mindfulness into daily life as well as cultivate an appreciation of workouts and the healing potential within.
